Mountain skills Instruction

Mountain Skills Refresher/assessment prep

For those who want some fine-tuning of Mountain Skills. Part of the day will be run like a mock assessment, with opportunities for further training and trouble-shooting. Each person will be given feedback and advice on how to prepare for assessment. Bring your logbooks.

Mountain Leader Refresher

  • Ratio 1:8
  • Cost €26.00  

Ideal for women who have done part or all of Mountain Leader Training, or award holders who want a refresher.  The day will include review of ropework, and navigation, including assessment-style legs. Each person will be given feedback and advice on next steps. Participants should bring their logbooks.

Mountain Environment Day

A day of discovery and learning, focused on flora, fauna, local heritage etc. A wonderful way to pick up knowledge to share within your club. ‘Bird enthusiast and bird ringer Jennifer Lynch is going to join us, we'll be going on a hike, looking at flora, fauna and the environment generally, but with a particular focus on picking up some of the skills to identify the birds found in Ireland's upland areas. As we can’t be sure what birds we will see on the day Jennifer is going to do a short slide show before we leave the centre.’

If you’re hesitating about leading walks, this is the right session for you. This indoor and outdoor workshop will address some of the situations that commonly arise when walking with clubs or groups of friends. Get advice on how you can step up to leading walks – and enjoy it!

SCRAMBLING Introduction

To cover route choice and techniques for unroped and roped scrambling.  Will include suggestions on places to go to continue improving. Possibly also practice taking coils, running belays, etc.

Participants should have experience of hillwalking in rocky areas.

SCRAMBLING Intermediate    

  • Ratio 1:4

As above, but for those with some prior experience of movement on steeper terrain and scrambling.

Climbing SKILLS Instruction

Rock Climbing: Competent Second    

  • Ratio 1:4
  • Cost €45.00  

Those with basic knowledge of rock climbing and belaying can develop their skills. Covers: equipment, tying and clipping on, belaying a leader, removing and placing gear, carrying gear, slings, understanding anchors and setting up belays.

ROCK CLIMBING: LEARN TO LEAD

  • Ratio 1:2
  • Cost €65.00            

For those with climbing experience who want to learn the skills of leading. Covers: Introduction to equipment, racking up, clipping, placing gear, belaying, climbing calls, anchor selection, setting up belays, personal abseiling, use of prussiks, leading routes under supervision.

ROCK CLIMBING: MULTI-PITCH CLIMBING 

  • Ratio 1:2
  • Cost €65.00       

Progressing from single pitch to multi-pitch climbing requires the development of existing skills and new skills.  This session will provide practical advice and guidance while out on the crags.

Participants must be competent belayers and have led single-pitch routes of V Diff or above.

ROCK CLIMBING: Intro to Climbing& Bouldering/Movement Skills

For those who are keen to try this exhilarating sport and acquire the fundamental skills of rock climbing and movement. Skills - footwork, body position, efficiency etc. Better movement skills and more confidence on the rock, are a key component to develop your climbing and leading grade!

Coastal Traverse & or Gorge walking

Challenge yourself with this exciting coastal journey – enjoy dramatic scenery while gaining some basic climbing skills.

Digital photography 

  • Ratio 1:8
  • Cost €26.00  

By explaining the different programmes on your camera, this workshop will help you move away from auto mode, providing tips and tricks through practical examples. Weather permitting most of the day will be spent outside. Participants should bring their own digital camera.

 

Self-directed activities

 Participants head out to walk and climb the hills, cliffs and crags of the area in self-led groups.
